Who Can Resist Magic by Moira Ackers

A word from the designer: I didn’t invent this simple resist printing technique, but over several years I have made it my own and I really love the results. Whether I use the papers created to further some design work, in my journals, or just as book covers or for an art background, I am always pleased with the results. What appeals to me most is that this technique is inexpensive, quick, safe, and very flexible in paper crafts. This is the sort of collage art activity you can do at home, and you might even let the kids join in (once you’ve tried it out a couple of times). Moreover, it is a method that will provide you with wonderful surfaces to work on and develop in your own mixed media projects. These collage ideas can be as sophisticated or as simple as you wish, you’re the contemporary artist!

Fusion-Dyed Collage by Traci Bautista

A word from the designer:
One of my favorite collage art materials is the unassuming paper towel. Because of its absorbent nature and various textures, the paper towel is a great canvas on which to create beautifully dyed papers to make a collage. After teaching kids’ art workshops, I found that paper towels became an inexpensive, readily available alternative to high-end rice paper for teaching the Japanese art of dyeing paper known as orizomegami. Needless to say, I have stacks of dyed paper towels and napkins anxiously waiting to be used in my art projects and other paper crafts. From this, fusion-dyed papers were born. This collage art technique merges layers of dyed paper towels, ephemera, and paint to create beautiful, transparent, textured pieces of paper art.

Mixed Media Watercolor Techniques by Jacqueline Sullivan

A word from the designer:
When we think of watercolor painting, often images of flower bouquets or serene landscapes come to mind. However, one does not need to know how to paint a scene or a still life (or want to) in order to enjoy the lush beauty and benefits of watercolor paints in paper art. A few years ago I began experimenting by adding other media to my watercolor paints and was amazed with the resulting mixed media art. I use transparent watercolor techniques with mixed media to create colorful, texture backgrounds for my paper crafts, collage art, mixed media, and handmade books.

Textured Backgrounds for Collage by Misty Mawn

A word from the designer:
My favorite bookstore once had the most beautiful doors—large wooden panels with copper bottoms and glass windows. The seasons had treated them harshly, or divinely, in my opinion, weathering the wood to achieve a stunning natural layer of patina. Then that dreadful day came when I visited the bookstore and the doors were gone, replaced by new unseasoned, uninspiring doors. I put a lot of thought into why this change bothered me so much and realized I have a deep passion for texture backgrounds and color. For me, creating textures is not about following a process or working within boundaries, it is about seeking out new styles and techniques in a spontaneous manner. My goal is to create a piece of collage art that can stand alone by creating as much depth as possible in the texture background before working on the foreground. Focusing first on the art background can give the entire piece a different feel and may bring new ideas to your art project as a whole. My favorite collage art techniques lately have been stamping with random items from my studio (such as marker caps, buttons, painted lace, and the rims of jars), transferring paint with paper, using gel medium to transfer images, and adding dimension to the textured background with mesh.
