An Editor’s Learning Curve
The best thing about working for Interweave is the exposure to all different art processes and media. The worst thing is that I am sometimes so focused on helping to curate the most amazing issue for you readers that I forget to stop and smell the creative “roses” that surround me.
So is the case with my recent discovery with Fiberarts magazine. I got a free few moments (between photo shoots and meetings with the Cloth Paper Scissors team) to browse the Summer 2010 issue. Wow! I was blown away with the art in this issue. Mere mortals would love this issue but us mixed media-ites? Well, we’ll eat it up and not leave any crumbs.
I really think it’s valuable to see amazing artwork like this on a regular basis whether you do so by visiting a local art museum or gallery, or by subscribing to magazines like this one. I am never tempted to try to recreate exactly what I have seen or read about, but I am always somehow inspired—even if the medium used is far different than my particular favorite.
These photos are just the tip of the iceberg. From a mixed-media installation, to a seriously intricate paper sculpture, each article offered me enough ideas to jumpstart a week of new projects in my studio. Where do you find inspiration like this? Fiberarts has been around for 35 years and I’m just now discovering it! I could just kick myself. (Thankfully the Interweave store has back issues too, so I don’t have to kick myself too hard.)
