Thoughts on Thursday: Prints with plants

With spring fully upon us and summer just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to get outdoors and find inspiration . . .and some fun supplies for art making.

In one of my blog posts in the fall, I shared some pieces I made after printing with leaves from my yard. It was a fun little project and I loved how colorful the print came out.

You can get equally nice results with many flowers, too.

Using a Plexiglas® plate, leaves and flowers with interesting shapes, and  ink, Cathy created this interesting and colorful print.

In the new, Summer 2013 issue of PAGES, Laura Ryan uses plants in a whole new way with her Boiled Books.

Laura places flowers and plants between the pages of a book, clamps the pages tightly together, and then boils the book!

Yes, in a pot, on the stove, resulting in amazing prints and colors.

Now that is something new to try! Just think of all of the options!

Don’t miss Laura’s article in the new issue of PAGES, due on newsstands June 4th!!

Step ourside and see what catches your eye. Can you print with it like Cathy? Boil it to make dye or textured prints like Laura? Hammer it between cloth to get a print like I did?

What interesting technique can you come up with? Leave a comment and tell us all about it.

Have fun!
