Jane Davies emphasises Daniella's use of what she called 'containers'... that is, limiting the parameters of your work such as palette etc. This rings so true to me as I tend to keep adding to my work, and often lose the power and spontaneity of the piece. Thanks for the tip Jane.

Ooooh this book looks nice, I love art books that come with a DVD because sometimes it helps to understand better when we actually see the technique «in motion».

I love the honesty in Julie Fei-Fan Balzer blogpost about the book.

I'm curious about this «container» point of view that was emphasized in Jodi Ohl blogpost.

I learned from Suze Weinberg that you can use encaustics on a variety of surfaces and really experiment with them.  You can use stencils, molds, and stamps with them.  Jane did it on paper. I would love to try is on variety of surfaces and glean from the book.

I love the fact that the book comes with a DVD too - this is good value and seeing something done always helps, particularly in encaustic where often a light touch is needed to be successful.

I love the versatility of encaustics.

Every encaustic piece has a richness to it

Newer pens and stylus guns help with incorporating lettering into art

Colours can be vivid and have an incredible depth to them

An amazing number of mediums can be combined in an encaustic piece

Unique images come from layering of waxes, drawing, paints, papers, inks

Sometimes encaustic art is perfect for those into creating intuitive works.

The book is full of techniques and ideas for those of us who like changes

I am in love with encaustics

Cheers to you at clothpaperscissors for offering us this chance to win!

(did ya notice the first letter of each line?). I'm trying to be creative so I can win! Tx!

Enjoyed the Encaustic  blog tour! I tried making and painting with encaustics many years ago. It was really fun. I had to stop because the oil paints, and solvents were not very healthy. it is great to see the newer products and what can be done with them. The book is on my wish list and I would love to win an encaustic set!!!

MKVidrine wrote

The thing that stands out to me as something I learned was the use on India ink, as documented in Bridgette Guerzon Mills' post. Based on her examples and the information she included about her experimentation, I feel like I could pick up some India ink and just start playing with including it in encaustic paintings.

What made me buy the book, though, is how different bloggers named different things as their favorite part- and all the sections named sound worthwhile, from using string to imposing limits on oneself.

am loving learning about encaustic and it's apparently limitless possibilities! The seniors I'm working with are also loving the process, so with such limited budgets it would be a huge treat to get some waxes so we can continue to play with wild abandon! Our confidence is growing in leaps and bounds. I particularly like Bridgette's work with wax and india ink and of course Daniella.

Containers, parameters, boundaries. Yes, when everything is available, it can be paralyzing. Limits are good at times. Some of the posts were very helpful and inspiring, others honest, and others befuddling for me. Still not sure what this medium is other than wax, or what to do with it, so--obviously I need a guide book.

Jane Davies talks about Daniella Woolf's use of the Container and how that frees you up since your work has limits you're playing within. This is an interesting concept since usually the approach is that you're free when you have no limits. It does make sense, though, that being contained means you don't have to think of the outside of your piece and so can concentrate on what's inside.

I am a big fan of Jane Davies style of selecting a few boundaries for each project.  When I am struggling with a blank canvas or a piece that is going no where I pull one or more restrictions from my jar.  Things like 'use this color or color combination,'limit materials,' or 'focus on one image or word.'  I never fail to discover ideas just by limiting my choices.  I was so glad to hear another artist does something similiar.
