Art Studio Organization: It's All in the Cube

You've heard of the little black dress? You know, the garment that you can dress up or dress down to suit the occasion? Well, let me introduce you to the versatile white cube–the perfect solution to your art studio organization dilemmas.

Before, a collection of modular storage you can configure any way you like. Furniture pieces from Go-Organize.com

In the Fall 2013 issue of Studios, the editors show how to take basic white modular organization components and arrange them in different ways to suit your studio work style.

All you have to do is follow these five simple steps:

1. Grab some graph paper.

2. Measure your work space.

3. List all the materials and tools you use.

4. Based on the size of your work space and the number of tools and materials you have, configure your studio's layout, and draw it on the graph paper.

5. Choose storage pieces that satisfy your work habits, and add personal objects that reflect your style.

To inspire you, the editors prepared three possible layouts-one for a jewelry studio, one for a mixed-media studio, and one for a sewing studio, using cubes from Go-Organize.comTM.

In the mixed-media example, the editors configured the cubes to account for the abundant supplies, materials, tools, and found objects we all collect. In addition, the variety of art techniques, including both wet and dry processes, can require mixed-media artists to spread out on the floor while also working on surfaces of varying heights. This pairing of both movable and stationary storage components-placed in a U configuration- meets all of these requirements and more.
