When I see all the cool materials you can use to create amazing mixed-media art, I have one fear: becoming a hoarder. I want to save everything! But all of my supplies and ephemera actually have a purpose–at least, potentially. I have button drawer, a stash of yarn, and drawers full of paints, brushes, markers, colored pencils–well, you get the idea. It’s all in good fun!
It’s always exciting to see what others are creating, so I wanted to share with you a few of my favorite mixed-media art pieces from our community members who have posted their work in the Cloth Paper Scissors online gallery. The theme for today is autumn, as we say goodbye to summer. “Puzzle-Pieced Autumn Medallion” is by Cheryl Kruthaupt, who tells us, “I’ve been using old jigsaw puzzles in my artwork for several years. I like to use various shapes and sizes of puzzles to give the finished piece a variety of textures. My latest technique is to make them into quilt blocks.
“First I put the puzzle together and paint the the picture side with two coats of gesso. Then I cover the back side with a coat of gel medium. When everything is dry, I colorwash the gesso side with colors that will work into a finished quilt block.When the colorwash is dry, I cover it with a clear glaze. Then I use an X-Acto knife to cut the puzzles into quilt shapes. (I might have to use four or five puzzles to get enough pieces to make the quilt block.) Then I piece them together to make a quilt block.
