Love the tip about adding elastic bands, etc. -- have to try that some time!

-Shoe polish is a favorite for staining wood; it doesn't run plus it smells good.

-Latex primer can replace gesso when I'm in a hurry.

-Melted crayon looks just like sealing wax, for photographic purposes.

-For scoring paper, my cake-server works fantastically well.

-The side of a highlighter marker flattens a paper crease just as good as a bone folder.

-Dental floss is a terrific substitute for beading thread; not only is it waxed and virtually unbreakable, if you use the mint one it imparts a fresh aroma!

The kids made two birds, one to keep and one for display in the library. The kids really loved this project! I wish I could upload some pictures-- how do you submit pictures to the magazine? But you can read a little article at theartree.org/.../the-artree-creates-birds-at-old-town-newhall-library.

I loved the Portlandia reference. When I was little I figured I'd know when I was 'old'- it would be when, like my Grandma, I liked birds and flowers. At age 11 I couldn't understand the fascination. But as I watch the finches and Grosbeaks at my feeder with my flowers blooming nearby and I get inspired to create birds and add them to my art...I guess I'm there! Thank you for the delightful inspiration.

For in-expensive acrylic paint, go to Home Depot's paint department and buy the littlest samples of whatever color you want.....or get the basic colors and mix them.

Don't have the correct bowl size to make a circle?? Use a string and pencil to draw a circle in whatever size you want.
