Remember Ruthann-A lesson in sharing creativity

1 Mar 2010

My facebook page reminded me today to stay in contact with Ruthann. Unfortunately I can't do that because Ruthann's shining light left us last May. I met Ruthann when she worked with my husband and over the years I saw her creativity grow. I would send her early copies of my books and eventually talked her into submitting her artwork for consideration for a book. She was an all around wonderful person but our contact existed primarily through creativity. She was generous in her compliments and I can't help but think how proud she would have been of my new position here at Cloth Paper Scissors. What my friendship with Ruthann reinforced is my need to encourage creativity in everyday life.

I'm sure many of you have people in your life like Ruthann, those people who can't wait to see the next thing you create and who have ventured out of their own box because of the joy they experience when they are inspired. I encourage you to spend time thinking of them today and creating something with that energy those thoughts bring to you.

Go ahead! Be creative. Celebrate life--both past, present and yet to be.

And, Ruthann, thanks. I will never be able to forget you, and I'm glad I never will.

I know what you mean....

Because I shall never ever be able to repay the myriad of ways my father guided me - to this day I sign my artwork NOT with my name, but rather with his. This does tend to confuse people who buy my work but I explain it to them and that gives me the added benefit of  yet another chance to pay verbal hommage to the man who I miss every day of my life since he passed away.

Someday, if I try very hard, I will grow up to be half of the person he was - whenigrowup.

My friend's name was Susan. When I first met her, she said "I'd like to learn how to make a quilt" and we went from there. She went on to make wedding gowns. Then she had to say "goodbye". I use the scissors I had engraved with her name when I feel uninspired. I hope your Ruthann and my Susan are friends. Wherever they are.

What a lovely tribute to your friend Ruthann.

I had a Ruthann who was a Lawrence :) - he used to be an art director.  When we met  he could see that I had talent but did not know how to promote myself.  He went out of his way to encourage me, to create my first brochure (10 years ago), to help me set up a booth at a local tradeshow etc.  He believed in me when i didn't even believe in myself.

I was very proud to include Lawrence's name in the Gratitude section of my book Journal Bliss.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share Jenn!

Love, Violette
