The artistic possibilities when mixing felt and other media are too numerous to mention, but they are all quite intriguing. We invite you to enter our Felted Wonders challenge and send us your best mixed-media with felt. We're looking for lovely small pieces of art. They can be wet, machined, or hand-needle felted. Add felt to a small collage, a fabric art piece, a wearable work, or start with felt and add your studio favorites like paint, stencils, stitching, and found paper and fabric. Show us the wonder of felt as we cozy into the winter, and you could be the winner of a Simplicity® Deluxe Felting Machine!

the rules

1. Create an original mixed-media artwork that includes wet, machine, or hand-needle felting. Your finished piece of art needs to weigh no more than 1lb. and be able to fit in an 8" x 10" padded envelope.

2. Your artwork must be free of any text or images that are protected by copyright, unless you have the expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you provide that written permission with your submission.

3. Mix your media. You may use paper, fabric, fibers, embellishments and found objects, inks, paints, stitching . . . and anything else that makes your piece unique. Just make sure that felting is included.

4. To be considered for the challenge, send two low-res image of your artwork via email by
July 9, 2012, to challenges@interweave.com, with the words "Felted Wonder" in the subject line. Please include your name, shipping address, email address, phone number, and a brief explanation of how you incorporate felting into your piece of art.

5. Finalists will be posted on Barb's blog at clothpaperscissors.com on July 16, 2012. Artists will not be notified directly.

Note: We encourage you to upload the image of your artwork to our Reader Challenge gallery on the clothpaperscissors.com community, but this is not required to be a part of the challenge.

6. If accepted as a finalist for the contest and print consideration, your artwork must be in our offices no later than August 7, 2012. At that time a flat shipping and handling fee of $8 U.S., $10 Canada, and $12 all other international will be due. For safety, be sure to place your entry in a plastic bag before packing it for shipping. Always attach your name and contact information to the art. All artwork will be returned the week of November 12, 2012.

Supportive Art Reader Challenge

In celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness month (October), we decided a bra-inspired challenge would be a wonderful way to acknowledge the occasion. We do not expect everyone to go out and embellish a real brassiere, though we suspect some will, but rather we look forward to many interpretations of the challenge. Paint, draw, collage or even mold a bra with your favorite molding medium. Whatever your chosen media, show us just how creative you can be.

"Cloth Paper Scissors Post"

We love getting mail. We love hearing from our readers via email, Facebook, Twitter, the clothpaperscissors.com community, and especially via good old snail mail (you know, the kind you have to buy a stamp for?). What better way to celebrate art and post than to actually post your art? We want you to create a fabric postcard using all of your yummy mixed-media skills and techniques, put a stamp on it, and send it to us!

the rules

1.      Design and create a fabric postcard that is 4" x 6". You may use any other mixed-media materials as long as the postcard is at least 50 percent fabric.

note: Your postcard must be free of any text or images that are protected by copyright, unless you have the expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you provide that written permission with your submission.

2.      Put a stamp on the postcard and make sure to add your return address with an email address. This is what we will use to label the postcards chosen for the magazine, so make sure it’s legible.

note: We will only photograph the non-addressed portions of the postcards.

3.      Write us a note on the postcard, and tell us how we’re doing. Or send us a haiku or a limerick; you decide.

4.      We encourage you to upload the image of your postcard to our photo gallery on the clothpaperscissors.com community.

5.      There is no entry fee for this challenge as the postcards will become the property of Interweave and will not be returned.

6.      Your postcards must be in our offices by Friday, January 20, 2012. We will feature some of the postcards in an upcoming issue of Cloth Paper Scissors and/or on our website.
