Cloth Paper Scissors Reader Challenges

Mixed-media Jewelry Gift Swap

There is nothing better than receiving a surprise in the mail. And what’s more special than a new piece of jewelry?

Cloth Paper Scissors invites you to be a part of our Mixed-media Jewelry Gift Swap. Use your favorite mixed-media supplies and ideas and send us a creatively inspiring pair of earrings, a necklace, a brooch, or a bracelet. A selection of the jewelry will be featured in the November/December 2013 issue. All participants who adhere to the guidelines will receive a randomly chosen piece of jewelry in return. One lucky winner will receive the Editors’ Pick prize package, sponsored by iceresin.com, and worth more than $100.

Rules:

1.       Create an original mixed-media piece of jewelry: a brooch, a pair of earrings, a necklace, or a bracelet. Your submission must be sturdy and small enough to ship in a small padded envelope.

note: One submission per person.

2.       Your jewelry piece must be free of any text or images that are protected by copyright, unless you have the expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you provide that written permission with your submission.

3.       You may use any mixed-media supplies in your arsenal: paper, fabric, inks, paints, markers, stitching, wire . . . or anything else that makes your jewelry piece unique.

4.       Please place your artwork in a plastic bag for safety in shipping and attach a card to the jewelry with your name and contact information. This information will remain attached to the jewelry when it’s sent to its new home, so only include the information you wish to share.

5.       In addition, please include a photo of your piece of jewelry with your name, address, phone number, and email address.

note: We encourage you to upload a photo of your jewelry on the clothpaperscissors.com community, but this is not required to take part in the challenge.

6.       Your artwork must be in our offices no later than July 17th, 2013. At that time a flat shipping and handling fee of $5 U.S. and Canada and $10 for all other international locations will be due.  All funds must be in U.S. dollars and made payable to Interweave.

All artwork will be shipped by November 15th.

Give this challenge a try by mixing those simple instructions and your signature style. The samples in the article were relatively unadorned, but we know you can turn up the heat with your mixed-media stash. Doodle, collage, paint, stitch, quilt, layer, or otherwise embellish your pages to make your own little theatrical tunnel-book show.

Make Mine Mini

Colorful, dazzling, inspiring . . . eye-catching! All of these words and many more are used to describe artwork, and often they are used all at once! But how often have you used "mini"?

We invite you to create a mini piece of mixed-media art, 4" x 4" or smaller. Use your paints, encaustics, collage papers, fibers, stitching, and more to create this wee masterpiece. Try making something you would normally do large and make it Lilliputian.

the rules

1. Create an original, mini, mixed-media piece of art. Your finished piece needs to weigh less than 1lb. and be able to fit into a 6" x 6" box, or smaller.

2. Your artwork must be free of any text or images that are protected by copyright, unless you have the expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you provide that written permission with your submission.

3. Mix your media. You may use paper, fabric, fibers, embellishments and found objects, inks, paints, stitching . . . and anything else that makes your piece unique. Just make sure that it is 4" x 4" or smaller.

4. To be considered for the challenge, send two low-res images of your piece, one full image and one detail shot, via email by January 4, 2013, to cps.challenges@interweave.com, with the words "Make Mine Mini" in the subject line. Please include your name, shipping address, email address, phone number, and a brief explanation of your piece.

5. Finalists will be on the Reader Challenge blog on the CPS community on January 11, 2013. Artists will not be notified directly.

note: We encourage you to upload the image of your Make Mine Mini artwork to our Reader Challenge gallery on the clothpaperscissors.com community.

6. If accepted as a finalist for print consideration, your artwork must be in our offices no later than January 30, 2013. At that time a flat shipping and handling fee of $8 U.S., $10 Canada, and $12 all other international will be due. For safety, be sure to place your entry in a plastic bag before packing it for shipping. All artwork will be returned the week of April 18, 2013.
