mixed-media ‘mini book’ reader challenge

We just love books. Paper, cloth, new, old, store-bought, or hand-bound, it doesn’t matter. We’re looking to you, hoarders of paper, possessors of waxed linen, and certified bone-folder enthusiasts, to think small and handmade. We want to see what you create when given a “mini book” assignment. Will you make a dos-à-dos or a thermal-bound book; use a coptic stitch or a spiral bind? Surprise us. The choices are endless, but the deadline is not.

Send us your best, handmade “mini book” and you may find it gracing the pages of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine. We’re giddy with anticipation and can’t wait to see the wonderful tomes of cloth and paper that will soon be gracing our mailbox. Now, get thee to a bindery!

the rules

  1. Create an original, mixed-media mini book. Your artwork can be no larger than 6" x 6" x 1" and weigh no more than 1lb.
  2. Your book must be free of any text or images that are protected by copyright, unless you have the expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you provide that written permission with your submission.
  3. Mix your media. You may use paper, fabric, fibers, embellishments and found objects, inks, paints, stitching…and more.
  4. To be considered for the challenge, send two low-res images of the piece (one of the entire piece and one detail) via email by September 1, 2010, to challenges@interweave.com, with the words “Mini Book Challenge” in the subject line. Please include your name, address, email address, phone number, and a brief explanation of your piece along with your photos.
  5. Finalists will be posted on Barb’s blog at clothpaperscissors.com on September 10, 2010. They will also be notified by email.

    note:
We encourage you to upload the image of your “mini book” entry to our Reader Challenge gallery on the
clothpaperscissors.com community.

  6. If accepted, your artwork must be in our offices no later than October 1, 2010. At that time a flat shipping and handling fee of $10 U.S., $15 Canada, and $20 all other international will be due. For safety,
be sure to place your entry in a
plastic bag before packing it for shipping. All artwork will be returned
by November 30, 2010.

note: Due to rising shipping costs, all international entries, with the exception of Canada, will be returned via the postal service.

‘winter holiday gift’ art swap

Feel like winter is still a long way off? Have you started writing up your list of handmade gifts you’d like to make and give this year? Let us help inspire you to get into the spirit of giving (and receiving) with our “Winter Holiday Gift” art swap.

We’re inviting readers to swap a small winter holiday gift of art. You send in your lovely little, unwrapped, handmade gift, and we’ll send it on to another participant. In return, you will receive a handmade gift in your mailbox as well. So send us your best work in the form of a small canvas, handcrafted magnet, mini wall hanging, or other gifty item, and we’ll help you spread the joy this year.

the rules

  • Create an original, mixed-media gift. Your artwork can be no larger than 5" × 7" × 1" and weigh no more than 1lb. Only one gift per person, please.
  • Your gift must be free of any text or images that are protected by copyright, unless you have the expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you provide that written permission with your submission.
  • Mix your media. You may use paper, fabric, fibers, embellishments, and found objects, inks, paints, stitching, etc.
  • Attach a card with your name and email address to the back of your gift (or use a string) so the person who receives it can contact you, if they’d like. If you prefer not to share your email address (or you don’t have one), just write your name.
  • Take a photo of your gift and include a copy with your submission. On the back of the photo, please include your full name, mailing address, email address, and phone number. This information will be used to contact you, if necessary, and to mail your swapped gift to you. We encourage you to upload the image of your “Winter Holiday Gift” entry to our photo gallery.
  • Include an entry fee of $6 (U.S. and Canada) and $10 (all other international), to cover postage and handling. All funds must be in U.S. dollars and made payable to Interweave. Swap participants, including international residents, may charge the entry fee to their credit card. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. Please include the necessary information, including the expiration date and CVV code. • For safety, place your gift in a plastic bag before packing it for shipping.
  • Your gift must be in our offices by Monday, August 2, 2010. We will swap the gifts and mail them out no later than the week of September 27, 2010.

note: If you have any questions, contact Barbara Delaney at bdelaney@interweave.com. Please be sure to include your first and last names and your contact information in all email correspondence.

Please send your gift to:

“A Haunting we will Go!"

Jack-o’-lanterns and trick-or-treaters; witches, skeletons, and black cats; windy nights and cloudy skies. It’s a fun and sometimes spooky time of year. Celebrate fall with us and create a piece of mixed-media art. Show us what “A Haunting We Will Go!” conjures up in your artistic mind. The piece may be one-, two- or three-dimensional. It’s your choice, as long as you mix your media and follow the challenge rules.

the rules

  • The entire piece and all of its packaging must weigh less than 3 lbs. and fit into a shipping/mailing box (no larger than 10" x 10") or a padded envelope.
  • Your entry must be free of any text or images that are protected by copyright, unless you have the expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you provide that written permission with your submission.

  • To be considered for the challenge, send two low-res images of the piece (one of the entire piece and one detail) via email by May 14, 2010, to challenges@interweave.com, with the words “A Haunting We Will Go!” in the subject line. Please include your full name, address, email address, phone number, and a brief description of your piece, including materials and techniques used.

  • We will announce the finalists on May 19, 2010, on Barb’s blog. Finalists will also be notified by email.
