I started by taking a photograph of a giraffe's eye on a field trip to the zoo and putting it on Instagram. I resized that photo using Photoshop so that it would fit the canvas. Then, I put a base of fabric down, and on top of that, I put Elmers glue and acrylic paint to create a crackle. Once the crackle dried, I did an acrylic transfer of the photograph, on top of which I water colored and put gold acrylic paint.

Ta- da!

Painted recycled corrugated paper, painted water color paper pages, bits a bobs of ephemera, original poetry, soldered shells, ribbons, glass fish, fabric and a hammered copper title page and a special fish hook complete with a bait fish on the hook and we are ready for a day at sea.

I photographed the flowers in my garden and after they were printed I painted on top of the photos with acrylic paint. Those were then glued to 6”x6” cardstock and embellished with stamps, embossing, paint, ephemera, text, ribbon and leaves. The cover is made of mat board covered in fabric which I also painted and embellished. The binding is ribbon wrapped over a stick from the garden and embellished with an assortment of ribbons.

I was very fortunate to learn the bookbinding techniques of DJPettitt, who creates fabulous mixed media art books. Learning to make books was the perfect synergy of all I have been doing lately, which is collage, beading, bead embroidery, collection of ephemera, calligraphy, abstract and representational drawings sewing, hoarding found objects, and mixing my media. What better way to stir the collected interests than art books. This small art book is my second book and it has stitching, bead work, altered vintage imagery, beading and features beaded details and vintage metal elements. The twelve pages within are composed of paper and fabric and and are a visual essay called The Winter Sky. When closed the book is 3.5" x 5" and one inch thick.

So much fun to make! This book came out of Leah Piken Kolidas’ Art Every Day Month Challenge November 2009. I started making postcards, painting them over wax crayon, collaging them and then started sewing my fabric scraps to them. I had just started quilting and my fabric scraps were all over the floor. I loved the mixing up of fabric and paper and from there it just seemed natural for me to turn them into books. Also it gave me a good excuse to learn a new stitch in one Keith Smith's books.

A scrap of window screening found in my garage inspired this tactile 3 inch square mini book. I used the screen as a base to weave embroidery floss and yarn through then attached it to book board to form the cover. The paper pages are colored with Prismacolor colored pencils and Adirondack Color Wash sprays to continue the aqua and red color scheme. Lace, yarn, velvet ric rac, and ribbon were machine sewn to the pages. The pages are bound together using the coptic stitch.

My First Book Binding

This is my first book binding attempt. I figured why not for the mini book challenge. I used the japanese stabbing method. I found it soothing while I was working on it.

This will be an art journal for my daughter to give to her daughter when all is said and done.
