Do you ever wonder how you can have this much stuff? Well, I've put it in boxes of uniform size and bins of fabric or cardboard --no more purchasing plastics for me! The middle shelf is a series of slots for storing folders, packs of paper, large envelopes etc.

The fabrics that I am most likely to reach for are stored here (other stuff is higher up, or in next room). I put the walls to good use for both decoration and storage. The purple and teal unit in the corner was actually 2 separate pieces -- a bureau and a glass front cabinet, but when stacked and painted as a unit they look like they were meant for each other.

the work table has a metal enameled top, and it sits on a kitchen cabinet that was purchased at a buliding supply "yard sale". The table has full extension drawers which are great for storing large sheets of paper. Small nails in the side of the unit provide handy, yet out of the way storage for rulers.

This corner doesn't see much creative action, but it does some heavy work when it comes to storage! The step stool provide as extra seat for studio visitors and the seat flips up for helping reach extra-high storage.

I remodeled, painted, layed the floor and put the quarter rounds in all myself. It's kind of Ikea meets Antique Roadshow but I love it.

My dream studio was realized when I moved to our new three bedroom townhouse in North Carolina. I combed over many a Studios magazine for inspiration. I wanted lots of organized space, an office area for my computer, a comfortable place to curl up with magazine or to do handstitching, and a large cutting board. Now I have more than enough organized space to sew my victorian, steampunk, 18th century, and pirate costumes.

My studio is located in a 1860's Courthouse ..complete with restless spirits from the past ..and things that go bump in the night (I tend not to work there at night much! :-) My window overlooks the now abandoned jail and the courtyard where public hangings occurred up until the 1960's..This aside..the space is my sanctuary..A small white room with an 18 foot high ceiling-it emanates a welcoming glow despite it's ragged past.

I collect old things..like many artisans here..my vintage suitcases overflow with old photos and ephemera. My distressed doll collection oversees my creative projects ..and a variety of old and new paintings grace my walls to keep me on track

In this particular photo you will notice my most beloved possession- a Frida Kahlo project quilt created in a round robin by artists from here there and everywhere..lucky me to have it now.:-) Frida inspired me with her story and jump started my ceativity back in 2009..I owe her for that..!

Pretty Storage

Since I work in my studio (office and craft room) for as many as 50 to 60 hours a week, I needed a space that felt comfortable and pretty. So my storage solutions were selected for both functionality and attractiveness.

The black table has what looks like drawers, but are actually trays that pull out completely and can be used to store projects or like-items.
The smallest box on the floor contains all my electronic stuff, like my web cam and electronic drawing tablet.
The big box houses tools, tote bags, and empty storage containers. Note: the boxes also serve as steps to the counter top where my cat suns herself. She approves of this space as well.
To save money, we broke up some beautiful teak bookcases and covered them with melamine tops.

I did not want storage above desk level as I felt that this gave me a crowded feeling. So the only things on the walls are artwork. I'm slowly working towards replacing store bought art pieces with my own art. I hate to give up the sophistiated feel of the room, and since most of my art is handmade books and journals, I haven't gotten around to replacing much on the walls yet.

I use to store my handmade books in a box. Now I display them in my grandmother's old bookcase so that I am more likely to visit them again and again.

Play Date Setup

When friends come over to create, I set up my workspace with samples of things we plan to work on and get everything ready to start the play right away. In this photo, one friend was having her birthday (thus the gift bag on the chair). I often set up play dates as part of my birthday gift to my friends.

Work and Crafts station

I work from home and my space accommodates both work and my paper crafts. My space needs to stay clean and neat.

The desk was made from the tops of two bookcases. My husband cut them down to desk height and we made a melamine top that spans both bookcase tops. We put sliders on the bottom of the bookcases so that I can slide the desk out when my friends come over to play. Because we already had the bookcases, the only real cost was the top, the sliders and a black plastic cover for the hole in the desk used to run the wires to my electronic devices (computer, backup drive, and CD player).

The bookcase shelves provide space for my box collection on one side and my work supplies on the other. Of course my box collection is additional storage.

The shelving and counter top in the background were also built from the same bookcases. These were the bottoms of the two book cases used for the desk. We did not modify them, but only covered then with melamine also. This gives me a large working space. To make them a little prettier, I painted some molding we got from the home improvement store. It had a pretty leaf pattern, so I used the wall color (green on this wall - my space has two yellow walls and two green walls) to color the leaves.

All-in-all, what we had spec'd out to be about a three-to-four thousand dollar project (desk and wall storage), only cost us about $300. Now that is what I call upcycling.

This is my little studio where I create mixed media, sew and paint. I had this space built off of our garage. It's equipped with heat and I have a window A/C unit for those hot summer days. I enjoy this space so much. It's like going out into my own little world where I can focus on being creative.
