Here are Beryl Taylor’s instructions for making fabric paper. It’s easy and fun!

  1. Take a piece of open-weave muslin and paint it all over with diluted PVA or white glue.
  2. Embed wrapping paper, images, text, etc., into the glue layer, leaving spaces in between.
  3. Apply another coat of diluted PVA or white glue over the top. Embed craft tissue (tissue paper) into the glue layer.
  4. While the glue is still wet, paint on dyes using a sponge applicator.
  5. Let dry completely before cutting and stitching.

I have used this technique and I love it. I used a nylon scarf for my fabric and it gave it a sandpaper texture to the finished piece. I also tried painting tissue paper instead of buying it and it works great....just make sure it is completely dry first! (The voice of experience)  I used photos printed off the computer, burned the edges and love the look it gave. Thank Beryl for the inspiration!

I love this technique  and used old tissue paper from shoe boxes etc which gave an antique look - exactly the look for my journal pages.  I also use teabags to colour as well which give it a linen finish and old sheets that have gone thin in the middle are just the thing for the base material.

I've been experimenting with different substrates and dilutions of glue.  50-50 is too thin and paper doesn't stick.  I like using spent fabric softner sheets as a substrate.  Works quite well.  Thanks for posting

I've tried this and it's brillaint to work with - only one draw back and it's a huge one so would appreciate knowledge from others, my tissue colours faded in the sunlight and the work is ruined, Is there any tissue that it fade proof or even a colouring/dye product that I can use to colour white tissue that us fade proof? thanks very much.
