Mixed-media collage by Sara Pearce.

Made with original antique engraving (Frank Leslie's Popular Monthly, June 1888), text (First Lessons in Numbers, 1865; Spencerian System of Penmanship, 1888) and paper. Vintage parcel post zone ruler and illustrations (Art Forms in Nature; Insects & Flowers: The Art of Maria Sibylla Merian). Recycled greeting cards and candy wrappers. Watercolor, marker, ink, archival glue. On archival mat board. 10” x 14” (unframed); 16.5" x 20.5" (framed). (2013)

This collage is part of an effort to do more complex cutting and layering. The text, etc. was woven into the "hair" using tweezers.

The collage also represents an unnamed series in which I am reinventing the "beautiful women" images of the Victorian era by turning them into something more than just a pretty face.

ps: I documented the making of this collage, which you can see in this post on my blog:

Just love this... love the flower petals around her head that act as a buffer for her 'hair'... amazing!

I pinned it to Pinterest, I liked it so much.
