A few months ago I decided to embroider a sketch onto canvas and turn it into a collagraph. Adding back color either by hand coloring the plate (not shown) or by embroidery (still life with vases detail 2) means the possibilities are endless. I chose kantha stitching for this piece. I was in need of something meditative and simple. This is similar to Japanese sashiko in that it uses a simple running stitch. Both types of embroidery originated with the need to mend or re-use cloth.
