Medieval Hearts & Leaves

I am often inspired by motifs found in medieval manuscripts.  The central heart and crown of this piece is made of fabric paper composed of text from various medieval Books of Hours.  The heart is sewn to a backing of red velvet and felt with couched gold thread.  A center motif of red velvet is sewn on with more gold thred and beads.  The heart is also decorated with gold foil and black pen.  The raised leaves are green silk fused to felt and hand embroidered to the background with a blanket stitch in variagated green floss.  The stems were made by twisting bias cut green silk and ironing it into cording.  The stems are stitched down with gold floss.  The blue flowers are made of silk stitched down with bead centers.  The piece is further embellished with gold sequins and seed beads and edged with narrow gold trim.
