This journal is based on the Japanese design concept of Notan which utilizes the interplay of light and dark next to each other. Using this concept two printing plates are created. The designs are cut from foam in a symmetrical pattern playing with both the positive and negative areas of the design. Once attached to the boards the designs are used to monoprint onto black and white text pages. Metallic paint is used to pop the colors off the pages. Once the printing is done, the printing plates are covered with metallic foil to become the book covers. The design is worked into foil and black paint is added to emphasize the Notan design. The binding is an interesting combination of French and Coptic stitches.
