This is an altered book that is also serving me as a sketchbook/idea book for making ceramic sculptures and vessels. The open double page measures 10 by 15 inches.
I started with a Vogue Sewing Book from 1970 (l like to sew, but some of the instructions and illustrations were pretty quaint). I covered the two pages here with a light wash of gouache in orange-y tones, then made the slanting white marks with more gouache. The kind of three-tiered snowball image in the lower left corner was photocopied from an earlier sketchbook; then I went over it with pencil and white marker. The other images are illustrations I cut from a discarded biology textbook.
