Based on the poem by Marianne Moore of the same name, "Roses Only" is about the need to understand the strengths inside us, to know that "your thorns are the best part of you." I covered the canvas in plaster and then covered this with burlap and a mixture of ground rice, sealing it all with several layers of paint. The roses of the title were created with fabric and painted with metallic acrylic paints. Around the flowers are pieces of glass that pick up the light and give a striking look to the piece. To add a human element and story to the surface I drew a woman in a 1950's style sleeping gown and printed several dress patterns and directions in fabric. For me this represents an outer mask juxtaposed by her black and white alter egos along each side of her Finally I hand wrote Marianne Moore's poem into the surface.
