Schwitter's Legacy is an 18"X24" assemblage created on a gallery-wrap canvas. In choosing its elements, I made a very small dent in my huge collection of vintage ephemera. I used regular-density matte gel medium to apply the papers and heavy-density gel to add the 3D embellishments. The title is tongue-in-cheek since Schwitter himself actually used far fewer elements in most of his collages and assemblages. I created this artwork after browsing through a recently published collection of his work. After my artwork was completed, I had the opportunity to see the traveling exhibit of some of his selected artworks at Princeton University. Seeing his art in person, I was surprised to discover that most of his collages were much smaller than I had assumed, when browsing through the book.
