"Thelma" was a project designed to teach my high school art students how to judge/match value in drawing and in collage. The graphite pencil drawing of the body is rendered on quality drawing paper affixed to foam core. The head is collaged in materials that include text from a vintage encyclopedia on vertebrates, along with flocked, translucent, and embossed papers. The head, also mounted on foam core, is suspended by a spring that allows it to bobble. This exercise inspired other animal characters for a possible children's book project.
