This painting was the result of a challenge I was given: complete a mixed media piece with the title: A Secret Garden. It was Autumn and I love the way the trees light up with color, so I began there. As a child I thought trees held secret doors to other worlds, so I included the same concept – a peek into the busy, mundane life of a city (using black and white as symbolism) from the perspective of the Secret Garden.
Watercolors were used on 140 lb Aquarelle paper. Layers of foreground were drawn, painted, cut and adhered to give a 3-D effect, including the grass, rabbit and the butterfly.
