Mixed-media collage inspired by words cut from a found manuscript that read, “maintain a pace three steps ahead of fate.” The layout includes pages from a 1950s medical students pocket notebook and vintage pharmaceutical descriptions, vintage book pages and spine, vintage numbers, and rub-on letters.

Gather pieces for a collage from found materials and books. Paint over some papers with a thin layer of white fluid acrylic paint. Create a unique layout and glue papers down with slow-drying matte gel medium. Leave some area free of content. Add patterned tissue paper, linen form a book spine, rub on letters and washi tape for texture. Outline edges with brown maker blended into layout. Glue on rusty key with Aleene’s Turbo Tacky Glue. Press collage between wax paper and weigh under a heavy book to allow it to dry flat. Trim off excess edges from watercolor paper and glue to artist board for framing.
