I've been working on a series called The Grand Tour for a while now. It began as a way to showcase the hand-painted, fashion plates found in 19th century women's magazines such as Godey's Lady's Book and Peterson's. As the series has progressed, the women have become more daring – venturing further away from the requisite stops of The Continent that were recommended for any well-healed young adult.
This mixed-media collage was made with a fashion plate from Godey's Lady's Book's December 1842 issue, as well as antique maps (Guyot's Physical Geography, Scribner's, 1872; Natural Advanced Geography, American Book Co., 1901); vintage illustrations (Whole Earth Catalog back cover, Fall 1969; Harter's Picture Archive, Dover, 1978); watercolor; ink.
