Artist Profile: Ruby Silvious

Ruby Silvious, visual artist and graphic designer, was profiled in the July/August 2017 issue of Cloth Paper Scissors. Her recent works include recycled and found materials, and can be found on substrates as small as pistachio shells and steeped tea bags. Ruby’s tea bag artwork spawned three series of work. Check out the full profile in the July/August issue. Here is a sampling of the information you’ll find, along with some of her wonderful art.

Cloth Paper Scissors: Did you have any expectations for how the tea bag series would influence or affect your artwork or your art practice? Looking back, what do you think the effects have been?

Ruby: Going into the project, I can’t say I had expectations that the tea bag series would influence my art, but my hope was that it would inspire others. Over the course of the year, art teachers from all over the world thanked me for being an inspiration to their students. It was also gratifying to hear that other artists and non-artists have been compelled to try their own versions of how to paint on this tiny canvas, and also how to experiment with this medium and adapt it.

Cloth Paper Scissors: Why do you think people are so drawn to your teabag artwork?

Ruby: They’re intrigued that art is possible on such a small canvas. I think they really enjoy this concept of repurposing the tea bags, and they can relate to the diversity of everyday subjects in my art.
