Swatton, Schwitter’s Legacy

Schwitter's Legacy  is an 18"X24" assemblage created on a gallery-wrap canvas. In choosing its elements, I made a very small dent in my huge collection of vintage ephemera.  I used regular-density matte gel medium to apply the papers and heavy-density gel to add the 3D embellishments.  The title is tongue-in-cheek since Schwitter himself actually used far fewer elements in most of his…

Swatton, Time and Space

Time and Space, a mixed-media collage, measures16"X20".  Using a stylus and working on a soft surface of stacked newspapers, I embossed aluminum foil with random patterns.  After spreading acrylic gel across 300-lb. watercolor paper, I added 2 pieces of foil, pressing them into the wet gel.  While the gel remained wet, I stamped it with other textured items, then added paper printed in a foreign language.  After…

Swatton, Orange Cruciform

_Orange Cruciform_ is a 20"X16" mixed-media collage.   Using acrylic paints, I covered watercolor paper with successive glazes of warm colors, orange-dominant.  After that dried, I added a layer of cool greens and blues; quickly, while this layer was still wet, I splashed the surface with rubbing alcohol.  Next I added more texture using several homemade stamps…

Coils collage

Coils is a collage created on 18"X24" gallery-wrap canvas.   This collage is comprised of a variety of previously prepared  materials; among them is "puff-"painted paper:   I made a "puff" mixture of shaving cream and Elmer's Glue, brushed it across Kraft paper, and sprayed it with assorted watercolor paints.  After that dried, I spread a protective layer of gloss medium over the…

Gold Line collage

I created the collage Gold Line on 18"X24" gallery-wrap canvas using a variety of previously prepared papers and other materials; among those other materials were hand-dyed pieces of Sulky Paper Solvy, a water-soluable adhesive material meant to be used as a sewing aid, which I used to create textured paper castings.   Also used in this collage was a "mesh sandwich"…

Prayer to Forgive collage

The collage Prayer to Forgive, created on 18"X24" gallery-wrap canvas, started with the addition of pieces of foamboard that I'd cut into geometic shapes; I then painted these with the same mix of pastels that cover the entire base.   This collage is comprised of a variety of previously prepared papers and other materials; among those other materials were hand-dyed pieces…
