Painting with Paper: more works from Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson

In her article in the November/December 2008 issue of Cloth Paper Scissors, Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson shows how to “paint with paper” to make mosaic-like collages. Here’s how she describes her work in her artist statement:

“My technique has evolved and changed as a result of experimentation with hand-painted, handmade, and found papers, maps, magazines, Scrabble tiles, and memorabilia. I draw inspiration from potential collage materials that I come across in my day-to-day; chopstick wrappers, teabag tags, and the kids’ homework included!”

Shown here are: ‘”Out to Pasture,” (above) “Enchanted,” and “Peach Pie.” Look closely to see if you can identify the kinds of papers Elizabeth used in these “paper paintings.”
