“When looking at Sailors’ Valentines, I was amazed that shells could be employed with the same symmetry and repeat of pattern that I associate with traditional quilt squares. It was with this in mind that I started planning my valentine.

“In this project I decided to use pasta shells instead of sea shells. Islanders used sea shells because it was a material plentiful to them, and their colors, shapes, and different sizes called to their imaginations. I, too, used my imagination, only it was pasta shells that called to me.”
