Composted Flower Garden (detail)

Composted Flower Garden is the first in a series using primarily post-consumer materials to construct the quilt.  With the exception of the thread, batting, and some of the couched decorative thread, the quilt is recycled from the trash cans of several fiber workshops and my home studio!  I delight in the texture and bright color of  the composted surface.  It reminds me of the wildflower covered meadows of a South Texas spring.

Techniques used:

The surface is made entirely of rotary trimmings, dryer lint, fabric ravellings.    The 3-dimensional flowers on the surface were created from used Fed-Ex and Priority Mail envelopes.  The quilt back is an old thrift store sheet that was over-dyed.   The fabric “compost” was couched onto stabilizer with old yarn and decorative thread.  The piece was machine quilted with long-strand cotton thread.

Dimensions:  39 inches long by 47 inches wide
