free flow

My fabric started out as white 100% cotton, and was painted with layers with fabric dye and fabric markers. I repeated a happy accident of brushing dye crystals on the fabric then spraying it with a water bottle.  While working, I thought of variations of lines in nature, how beautiful they are in their randomness and changeability, like ripples of wind in water, veins in a leaf, and layers of sediment in rocks.

I tried to control how the lines went, but they seemed to have a life of their own, and I let them go where they wanted to go! These swirly lines have been appearing in my work for years, so it was freeing to give them a space of their own, where they could flourish and grow. It's wonderful to see everyone's fabric. There are so many unique designs and such vibrant energy!
